In the developing fetus, there is an area of fluid that
accumulates in the back of the neck that can be measured during an ultrasound.
This is called the "nuchal (neck) translucency." It has been realized that
fetuses with a greater amount of this fluid have a higher risk for several
abnormalities, including Down's Syndrome and heart defects. Measurement of the
nuchal translucency by ultrasound between 11 and 14 weeks gestational age has
become an accepted method of early screening for these problems.
Because of the importance of standardized and careful
screening in this somewhat difficult measurement, special training and
certification is necessary before nuchal translucency screening can be offered.
In our practice, Dr. David Henderson has been certified by the Fetal Medicine
Foundation as a provider of this test.
Nuchal translucency screening is offered at our office as a
non-invasive way to screen early in pregnancy for several important problems.
We will be happy to discuss this with you during your early prenatal care.
