Medications Safe for Use in Pregnancy

 

The following medications have been taken during pregnancy and have not been shown to cause birth defects. Even so, we recommend not using any medication unless necessary. If you take a medication routinely for a medical problem and are unsure about the medication, please contact our office prior to discontinuing that medication. Take all medications according to the manufacturers directions listed on the bottle unless otherwise directed by your physician.

*The medications below that are in bold type and asterisked are safe during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters only.

Antibiotics: Macrobid, Penicillin, Keflex, Erythromycin

Antihistimines: Allegra, Benedryl, Claritin, Claritin D*, Dimetap, Sudafed*, Tavist, Zyrtec

Asthma: Ventolin, Beclovent

Blood Pressure Medications: Aldomet, Procardia

Congestion: Sudafed*, Actifed*, Drixoral*, Saline Nasal Spray

Constipation: Milk of Magnesia, Dulcolax suppository, Fleet’s enema, Colace

Constipation Prevention: Metamucil, Citrucel, Fibercon, Regular High-Fiber Diet

Cough: Robitussin DM, Cough Drops, Mucinex

Diarrhea: Kaopectate, Immodium

Headaches: Tylenol (Regular and Extra-Strength)

Hemorrhoids: Anusol, Preparation H, Nupercainal

Indigestion/Heartburn: Maalox, Mylanta, Tums, Pepcid, Zantac, Pepto-Bismol

Nausea: Emetrol, Unisom, Vitamin B6 25-50 mg four times daily, Phenergan, Zofran, Ginger tea and lozenges

Pain Medications: Vicodin, Lortab

Rash/Itching on Skin: 1% Hydrocortisone cream, Caladryl, oatmeal baths and lotions, cool showers and baths

Sore Throat: Warm salt water gargles and lozenges

Stool Softener: Colace

Thyroid Medication: Synthroid, Thyroxine

Yeast Infections: Monistat, Gynelotrimin, Terazol (ALL OK to use internally)
